If you have ever travelled on Route 62 before you know how beautiful that part of the countryside is, with its rolling hills and valleys, fruit and wine farms.
Round about the middle between Montagu and Barrydale is situated the Karoo Pride Accommodations. In between the working farms is this great little resting place that offer peace and quiet at a very good price.
Upon your arrival, friendly staff for your quick check-in and orientation will meet you. We quickly realised we will need extra wood due to the time of the year and cold temperatures.
Our cottage was the Rosemary cottage, which has both indoor and outdoor fireplaces. While there is a small kitchen with a convection oven and microwave, we always enjoy a great braai.
The area is safe and secure being about 2 kms off the main road and between the farms. Even so, because we come from Cape Town we were glad to see the car parked right outside our cottage.
There is plenty of privacy as the cottages are scattered all over the farm and not lined up together. There is a play area for the kids, a desk over the dam, a pool area, a games room and a few hiking trails.
As we were visiting out of the busy season, we expected absolute peace and quiet, which is exactly what we got. The sounds of the birds, frogs and geese were a pleasure for the soul.
Every morning you greeted with a spectacular sunrise and blown away by a beautiful sunset touching the dam. It was good to see so many stars again. Clear skies and fresh are was just what was needed.
As the place is meant for peace, they request not to play loud music and have not put a TV in each cottage. If you find yourself, desperate to see some TV then you can go up to reception and watch it there.
Late afternoon is the perfect time to start the braai and open a bottle red wine from the area and relax into a great evening. Baddydale also hosts a great quality local brandy, which is also a good choice, with some friends and great food.
There is not a lot to do during the day or night, but then isn't that why you there. To get away from the pressures of work and technology. I spent the time reconnecting with that quiet inner me and forgot about the world for just a little while.
We had a little rain on the second day which pleased the ducks and frogs. It was very peaceful to watch the rainfall to the ground and listen to the sounds of it on the tin roof, and rustling through the trees.
The cottage was an open plan type with a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. (Toilet, basin and shower) The kitchen had what was needed to make life simple. You will not find any frills here.
In winter, the beds have heated blankets. Therefore, between the indoor fire and the heated beds you will be quite happy and warm.
Bring slops or slippers as you walk mostly on concrete floors. Bring your own coffee, sugar and milk, which can be bought there as well.
Bring your laptop to watch a movie, if you tend to get bored.
